A Note From the Executive Director

I would like to officially announce our 2023 Dynamic Dialogue conference entitled, “Push Back against Book Challenges”. Libraries in Ohio and across the country have seen book challenges become more prevalent and volatile. These organized efforts to ban books not only harm the community, but also have a negative impact on library administrators and staff. With this conference, NEO-RLS will bring together speakers that will address the issues libraries are currently facing due to book challenges and how to counteract these efforts.

The conference will feature Keynote speaker, Patrick Sweeney from EveryLibrary, who will shed light on the data behind the book ban movement and discuss the motivations of book banners and their long-term objectives. Breakout session topics will include policy development, front-line staff response, first-hand accounts from directors who have faced book challenges, crisis management, and Banned Books Week initiatives. Our closing speakers, Dr. Steve Albrecht and Barry Trott, will end the day with a discussion about safety and security concerns that can arise from book banning efforts.

2023 Dynamic Dialogue: Push Back against Book Challenges will be held on Wednesday, April 5th, 2023 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Twinsburg, Ohio. For more information or to register, please visit the event page. We hope you will join us!

Have a great day!

Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) has a matching grant program to bring books and literacy resources to children that need them most.

The Matching Grant program is open to schools, libraries, and youth-serving organizations and enables RIF to match dollar-for-dollar your local budget to bring RIF programs to the children you support. This year, applications will be accepted for any of RIF’s three programs: Books for Ownership, Read for Success, or Skybrary. You can only apply for funding to support one of the programs. Applications close on February 28.

Last year, public library staff were also invited to nominate their top library users, and several of the READ ON! Award winners were nominated by public library workers. OELMA is eager to receive more nominations from public library workers in 2023. Nominations are open until March 22.
