A Note from the Executive Director

It’s amazing to me how long it takes to bring some ideas to fruition while others grow legs seemingly in an instant.  Our desire to provide some sort of listserv for our Network Groups has been one of those ideas that has taken a very long time and undergone many iterations.  But finally, due to a chance comment from Gayle Ecabert, Executive Director of SWON, we have a solution.  I am happy to be able to announce that we will be rolling out our listserv-like solution to two of our Network Groups on May 3rd.  We are doing a slow rollout in order to test the process and will begin with the HR/FO Network Group and the Academic Library Directors Network Group (ALDNG).  We are using a platform known as Discord which allows us to create a “server” for each of the Network Groups, allows Network Groups to create their own “servers” for chats about specific topics, and enables us to add participating Group members as requested.  Communication etiquette guidelines will be “pinned” to the “server” for each Network Group and we ask that you read and abide by the guidelines.  Discord is a very intuitive platform which allows you to easily ask a question or respond immediately to someone else’s question or comment, while also providing you the opportunity to look at the conversational thread at your convenience.  We have had fun testing it out and look forward to comments from our first users.  We think the use of Discord will provide our Network Groups with an easy way to maintain communication between meetings and ask questions and get answers from those involved in the same types of situations – all in an easily accessed and confidential environment.  We will announce the roll-out for the remaining Network Groups in the weeks following.  This is one of the services that our members have been requesting for the past several years and we are pleased that we finally have a solution in place that we think you will like.  Thanks for your patience and have a great week!

From OPLIN

Lynda.com Moves to LinkedIn Learning
In two weeks, Ohio libraries will begin moving from Lynda.com to LinkedIn Learning. All the new LinkedIn Learning for Library portals are active, and librarians can begin testing things out.

One word of caution before you do: Lynda account activity hasn't migrated yet. Any logging in with a library card and PIN into the new system will create a new LinkedIn Learning user. Once that's done, I don't think the legacy Lynda activity can be merged into the new account, so only test with accounts that don't have a Lynda history you want to preserve.

You can find your library's custom link and your designated account migration date on this spreadsheet. Don't put the new link out for patrons yet; you'll want to wait until after accounts migrate before you do that.

There is additional information at https://oplin.ohio.gov/lynda-transition. If you have questions, please reach out to me or any of the OPLIN staff at support.oplin.org.
