From the State Library

In December Ryan Dowd is offering TWO webinars:

  1. Too Many Bags: How to address someone bringing in too much stuff and
  2. Hoarding: How to help someone not get evicted.

The State Library of Ohio provides the opportunity for all Ohio public and academic library staff to attend both webinars and The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness training at no cost.

Webinar #1: Too Many Bags: How to address someone bringing in too much stuff

Some of the issues covered:
  • How to draft a "bag policy" (including sample policies and what NOT to do)
  • The different reasons people have too much stuff (Hint: The main reason has nothing to do with the stuff!)
  • Why your natural response is exactly the wrong one (and how to handle it instead!)

When: Thursday, December 9 at 2:00 PM Eastern Time
Length: 1 Hour
Pre-Registration Required: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/3015832712254/WN_rKb3fwwpRsO2uKhjjquFgw

Webinar #2: Hoarding: How to help someone not get evicted

Some of the issues covered:
  • The psychology behind hoarding (Hint: It is not about the stuff!)
  • Why you're probably handling it wrong.
  • How to do a last-minute cleanup (the right way!) before someone gets evicted

When: Thursday, December 9 at 4:00 PM Eastern Time
Length: 1 Hour
Pre-Registration Required: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/3015832712254/WN_X640LDi0QDCJLziy6Z8R3A

Anyone who misses a live event can watch an archived recording (with close captioning) on Niche Academy a few days later.

A former director of a Chicago homeless shelter, Ryan Dowd is the author of The Librarians Guide to Homelessness: An Empathy-Driven Approach to Solving Problems, Preventing Conflict, and Serving Everyone.  He travels all over the United States speaking to libraries about how to best help homeless patrons using empathy and respect.  He also provides training to police departments, nonprofits and other organizations on how to compassionately manage problematic behavior from troubled individuals.

To access The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness core training on Niche Academy, go to the State Library of Ohio’s Training and Professional Development page and click the homelessness training link.  Once in Niche Academy, you will be prompted to login or create an account. Certificates will be issued within Niche Academy after the completion of the core training or webinar.

If you have trouble accessing the training or upcoming webinar, email Erin Kelsey, Library Consultant at the State Library of Ohio at: ekelsey@library.ohio.gov

The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness core training purchased by the State Library in 2019 is available through August 2022. The online training, authored by Ryan Dowd, is available for all Ohio public and academic library staff.  The four-part training is an empathy-driven approach that provides best practices for library staff on how to understand the homeless population and serve them better. There are also practical tips on how to deal with and de-escalate common situations and issues, and make staff feel empowered and safe.  Archived webinars are available as separate modules in Niche Academy.
